A year ago if you asked me who Carl Bloch was, I’m not sure I would have been able to tell you. Although quite popular for much of his painting career, this Lutheran Danish artist, who lived from 1834 to 1890, seems to have been a bit forgotten. He fell out of favor later in his life as the art world turned to modernism. While most members probably didn’t know who painted the pictures, for years the church has been using his artwork. Today, it seems to be everywhere you look. Oil painting for sale;artist oil painting;portrait oil paintings My excitement grew a month or so ago when fellow ward member Sharon Seamons returned from the Bloch exhibit at Brigham Young University in Provo. She couldn’t say enough about her experience. You could tell she had been very touched. So my wife and I decided we needed to make every effort to go. As Sharon had recommended, when we got there we each checked out an iPad for $3 that contained supplemental information, photographs and video interviews. The exbibit features five large altar paintings from churches in Denmark and Sweden. Four of these paintings were taken out of their altar settings for the first time since they were originally installed in the late 1800s. The other altar painting, “Christ Healing the Sick at Bethesda,” has become the museum’s signature piece since it was acquired in September 2001. I’ve been to a number of art shows in my life, but I’ve never been to one that became a spiritual experience. My eyes were opened to a whole new world as the life of Christ came alive in his paintings. Perhaps it’s because we’ve seen many of these images before in association with our church. Or perhaps it’s because he truly captured the life of Christ. But I walked away feeling that I had seen the Savior and thinking Carl Bloch was probably the greatest painter of Jesus Christ of all time. Although this art exhibit is several hours away, all I can say is you really ought to find a way to see it. It will be open through May 7. Free tickets are available online at www.artclon.com. Oh, and if you can’t make it to Provo, large reproductions of many of Bloch’s paintings can be found on the second floor of the new BYU-Idaho Center in Rexburg. Though it’s not quite the same, these paintings are certainly worth a visit. LaBorde Oil Painting on Display at Crosslake Libra « Result #9 on Feb 22, 2011, 3:53am »
A show of original oil paintings by Laurel LaBorde of rural Crosby is currently on display at the Crosslake Library in Crosslake, Minnesota. Laurel has won numerous awards for her paintings which feature a variety of subject matter including still lifes, landscapes and portraits. She has taught classes in various art mediums and is an active member of the Crosslake Art Club.
An exhibit of paintings by Crosslake Art Club members is on display at the Crosslake Community Center through May. The Crosslake Art Club meets the first Monday of the month at 1pm at the Crosslake Community Center and interested artists are invited to attend.
